Two men are due to appear before Longford District Court next week in connection to the theft of DIY equipment, writes Liam Cosgrove.

Both suspects, aged in their early 20s, were arrested by gardai as part of an investigation into reported thefts that took place in the Oaklands estate area of Longford town last Thursday (August 29).

In each case, vans were broken into shortly after 2am, culminating in the disappearance of saws, screwdrivers, power tools and other home improvement appliances.

The men were later arrested and questioned over the incidents. They have since been released and charged with an expected court appearance pencilled in for next Tuesday (September 10).

Meanwhile, gardai are also said to be looking into the circumstances behind another case of suspected tool theft, this time in Kenagh.

An orange-coloured strimmer and a garden hedge trimmer were stolen from a red Toyota van inside the confines of Brookfield Park on Sunday.

Gardai have appealed for witnesses who may have noticed anything untoward in the estate between the hours of 12:30am and 8:45pm to contact them at Longford Garda Station (043) 3350570.

In the meantime, they have also appealed to the owners of high-value tools to ensure they are safely secured when leaving their vehicle and concealed away from public view.
