President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina were in Abbeyshrule this afternoon to honour the efforts of the local Tidy Towns Committee.

Abbeyshrule emerged as the tidiest town in Ireland during last year’s national Tidy Towns competition, and it was also the proud recipient of a Gold Medal in the Entente Florale, and subsequent cleanest town in Europe award.

During his address to the large crowd that gathered in the beautiful south Longford village this afternoon, President Higgins said that everyone associated with the village’s success, “should be very proud of themselves”.

“With small steps from the beginning, you have turned around your village,” he said, adding that the “hard work and dedication involved”, deserved recognition. “It is marvelous to be here in this wonderful, joyful and safe place that you call Abbeyshrule.”
