Hundreds of mourners descended on Newtowncashel last Thursday as the local sporting world bode a tearful farewell to county ladies football star, Alison Smyth.
Usually renowned for its quiet atmosphere and unobtrusive surroundings, the south Longford village was turned into a hive of activity as Mass-goers crammed into its Church of the Blessed Virgin to pay their last respects to one of Longford’s most talented sportswomen.
Alison, or Ali, as she was more affectionately known to her numerous friends, passed away suddenly just two days previously.
Leading figures from the world of GAA and basketball, two of Alison’s favoured sporting vocations, were in attendance in what was one of the biggest funerals to have ever been held in the tight knit community of Newtowncashel.
