‘Will I be arrested if I grow cannabis?’

A Longford County Councillor asked senior gardai this week if he was liable to be arrested for growing cannabis after a newly elected TD openly confessed to cultivating the banned substance.

A Longford County Councillor asked senior gardai this week if he was liable to be arrested for growing cannabis after a newly elected TD openly confessed to cultivating the banned substance.

Cllr Paddy Belton questioned Superintendents Dermot Mann (Granard) and Denis Shields (Longford) about how a public representative was allowed to continue growing the drug despite the fact it was an offence to do so.

“Is he by sayng that not a crime in itself?,” a bemused looking Cllr Belton asked. “If I was saying that I was was growing cannabis out in Kenagh would I be arrested?”

Supt Denis Shields said gardai were not in a position to provide Cllr Belton with a response and would not be commenting on any politicians recently elected to the 31st Dail.

“We are not going to give an answer and we are not going to make any reference to any elected member of Dail Eireann,” he said.

“I just can’t understand it,” Cllr Belton said.
