Hundreds of mourners attended St Mary’s Church in Athlone on Monday to pay their respects to Longford man Barney McGinley, who was killed at a family wedding in Co Fermanagh.

Up to 600 worshippers joined Mr McGinley’s widow Brigid, nine children, and extended family for the Funeral Mass.

Longford native Fr Turlough Baxter, who delivered a moving Homily, told members of the congregation Mr McGinley would be remembered as a devout family man.

He also told mourners that violence and retribution is never the answer.

“Even though Barney has died, for all you who loved him he will live on in the good things he has done, because goodness is always, in the end, stronger than the evil that others may do to us,” he said.

Mr McGinley was shot shortly before the wedding of a Traveller couple at St Mary’s Church in Newtownbutler last Wednesday.
