International Women’s Day takes place tomorrow, March 8 and locally there will be a number of events to mark the occasion.
On Monday, March 10 Longford Women’s Link (LWL) plans to celebrate by holding a day where the women of the county will be afforded the opportunity to gather together at the organisation’s base at Ardnacassa Avenue from 12.30-2pm. Everyone is invited to drop in during that time and enjoy a cuppa and a chat.
“International Women’s Day is the global day for honouring the achievements of women past and present,” CEO Louise Lovett added. “Women on all continents, though often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, cultural, economic and political differences, come together to celebrate the day. Reflecting this diversity LWL would like to celebrate how women can come together in the face of adversity.”
In nearby Carrick-on-Shannon, The Dock will play host to an exhibition curated by Highlanes Gallery, Drogheda, to celebrate International Women’s Day. A discussion entitled ‘Will the Feminist please stand up and stay standing?’ will be held and artist Abigail O’ Brien RHA and Dr Jane Humphries, will examine O’Brien’s exhibition and practice, and the role of Irish women artists within contemporary art.
