Roscommon Co Councillor Tom Crosby has spoken of the shock felt by the community of Strokestown following the tragic accident in the early hours of Sunday morning in which a 37 year old father of three lost his life.
Shane Donnelly, chief administrator at Meath County Council, died when the car his wife was driving plunged into the Shannon at Grange, near Strokestown. The couple were said to be travelling after a celebration in the area when the incident took place.
It is understood that the visibility on the night in question was very poor.
Mr Donnelly’s wife Aisling managed to escape the vehicle before raising the alarm. Mr Donnelly was pulled from the vehicle, but despite the best efforts of the local community, they were unable to save him and he was later pronounced dead.
Cllr Crosby says that the community is in “absolute shock” following the tragedy. “The whole community is stunned with this awful sad news.”
“I’d certainly like to extend my condolences to all concerned; family, wife, children and parents and indeed extended family” Cllr Crosby continued.
Mr Donnelly’s body was taken to Roscommon General Hospital for a post mortem. Gardaí at Boyle, Co Roscommon are investigating the incident.
