Vessel stranded on Lough Ree

Three German nationals were left stranded on Priest’s Island, Lough Ree, Newtowncashel, when their boat ran aground. On Wednesday, August 15, between 5pm and 5.30pm, the Carrick craft boat in which they were travelling, ran into difficulties at Cashel shore, Newtowncashel.

The occupants attempted to dislodge the boat by using a dingy. However, in the process the oars were lost and the occupants were left stranded on nearby Priest’s Island.

At approximately 8pm the coast guard was notified. The coast guard helicopter, alongside the RNLI lifeboat, was used to locate the occupants. Local Gardai also assisted in the search. The occupants were then taken to Lanesboro and although they were taken to hospital, there were no injuries reported.

Meanwhile at Brannigan Harbour, Ballymahon, between Thursday, August 17, and Sunday, August 19, an outboard engine was removed from a boat. The engine, which had been securely attached to the vessel, was valued at €2,500. Anyone with information is asked to contact Ballymahon Gardai on 0906-432303.
