Gardaí in Longford town have launched an investigation after a woman was sexually assaulted in the Ballymahon Street area of the town last Sunday night.
The 24-year-old local woman, who is believed to have been assaulted between 11pm and 11:45pm at Bog Lane, Ballymahon Street, was later treated at the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar for her injuries.
Gardaí are anxious to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and noticed anything suspicious and have appealed to those people to come forward with their information.
“We don’t believe at this stage that this incident is connected to the previous assaults, but we would appreciate the public’s help in relation to our investigation,” a garda spokesperson said.
This latest attack is the third such attack since last October and gardaí have renewed their appeal for information in relation to the serious sexual assault on a female, which took place close to the bridge at Farneyhoogan on October 10 last. The woman in her thirties was subjected to what gardaí are now describing as “an horrific ordeal” and they are treating the matter as “very serious”.
“We are treating this particular incident as a very serious matter,” the garda spokesperson told the Leader. “This was a violent attack and the woman was left extremely traumatised afterwards.
“We are extremely anxious to speak to anyone who may have information in relation to this and would ask members of the public to come forward and assist us with our enquiries.”
The Leader has also learned that a file is currently being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in relation to a sexual assault that took place in the Sandy Lane area of Longford town on November 27 last. During the incident, a local woman believed to be in her thirties was left traumatised and shocked after she was sexually assaulted in the early hours of the morning.

Meanwhile, Gardaí believe that a woman in her 60s who was badly beaten outside her home on November 13 in the Park Road area of Longford town was the victim of a random and unprovoked attack.
