Longford County Council could pay out over €1 million in rent on the former Longford Town Council headquarters between now and the time the lease expires.

The Longford Leader has learned that the county council is currently paying a figure of €62,572 each year on the Market Square property, with 16 years remaining on the lease it inherited from the Town Council after Government reforms resulted in the abolition of the Town Council in 2014.

Fine Gael County Councillor Peggy Nolan has said she intends to raise the issue at this evening’s meeting of Longford Municipal District, and added that she believes the building could be better utilised.
