Major celebrations are in the pipeline for the entire community in Granard this week, as the area gets set to welcome the Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Charles Brown to St Mary’s Church.

The prestigious event takes place on Sunday next, February 1 at 5:30pm and St Maeve Brady will also be honoured when she is bestowed with the Benemerenti Medal.

Speaking to the Leader, Fr Simon Cadam said the whole community was looking forward to the event which will also see a very special blessing placed on the people of Granard by the Archbishop.

“The term Benemerenti is derived from the Latin meaning ‘well deserved’ and Sr Maeve is receiving this very special honour in recognition of all the wonderful work she has done in the local community over the years,” Fr Simon added.

“The Benemerenti Medal hangs on a yellow and white ribbon in Papal colours and Sr Maeve Brady is indeed a very deserving recipient of this.”

“Also on the day, the whole community will receive a very special blessing from the Papal Nuncio who will lead us in solemn evening prayer on Sunday, February 1.

“Bishop Francis Duffy and Bishop Colm O’Reilly will also be in attendance.”
