A large crowd is expected to attend a public meeting tomorrow night (Thursday) to discuss fears over crime levels in County Longford.

The Longford Arms Hotel will provide the setting for what has been labelled as a “crisis” meeting by its main organiser Cllr Gerry Warnock.

The Independent representative called the meeting late last week after a Longford town business woman was held at knife point and bundled into her own car by thieves as she left work last Wednesday.

That followed a separate incident just days earlier when a bar-room brawl involving several men left a Longford town publican facing a €1,000 clean up bill.

What Cllr Warnock wants now is for tomorrow night’s meeting to provide the springboard for clear and decisive action to be taken.

“This meeting is not politically motivated or about garda bashing. It’s an opportunity to allow people who believe we (Longford) have a problem to express their point of view.”
