Detectives are on the hunt for a brazen thief who stole a woman’s purse as she walked along a busy street in Longford town at the weekend, writes Liam Cosgrove.

The woman was targeted just seconds after stumbling on a footpath in the Townspark area of town last Saturday, causing some of the contents of her handbag to fall out onto the street.

It’s then at around 1:30pm in broad daylight, gardai believe, that the thief saw his opportunity to strike before quickly making off on foot.

Investigators are also trying to establish whether the victim, who is in her late 70s, was deliberately set upon or if the cuplrit seized his chance as the woman tried to regain her composure.

Seperately, gardai are hoping a strong response from the public will aid them in their inquiries concerning a stabbing that took place at a funeral home in Longford town last week.

Three people were hospitalised as a result of a row which took place at Glennon’s Funeral Home along the main Balinalee Road between 4pm and 5pm last Monday (September 16).

Anyone who may have information in relation to either of these incidents is asked to contact Longford Garda Station at (043) 3346741.
