This weekend sees the eagerly-anticipated Mel’s Festival taking place in Longford town.
Organised by Longford Chamber of Commerce, the event centres around the ongoing restoration work on St Mel’s Cathedral, with an open day on Sunday, September 29 being one of the highlights of the weekend’s activities, as it will give the public a rare opportunity to see the progress made so far.
Friday night will see the launch of the festival in St Mel’s College, while on Saturday morning there will be a tour of Ardagh and an opportunity to visit the original St Mel’s church, followed by lunch and seminar with some of the leading figures in the restoration project. Saturday evening will feature dinner and musical entertainment.
Sunday morning will see mass celebrated at 10am, with a special guided tour of the cathedral afterwards, distinct from the public opening, which is free.
