Tributes were paid to the late Carmel Fay at last week’s meeting of Granard Town Council following the publican’s untimely passing four weeks ago, writes Liam Cosgrove.

Recently elected mayor Cllr Maura Kilbride-Harkin led the messages of sympathy as she recalled her friend’s 15-year stint on Granard Town Council.

Cllr Tommy Stokes summed up the mood inside

the council chamber, saying Mrs Fay’s death had left a deep void in the north Longford town.

“She will be sorely missed around Granard,” he said. Cllrs PJ Reilly and Sean Howard followed suit, with the former pointing to the Dring native’s penchant for the GAA.

Independent Cllr Eddie Kelly said he knew Mrs Fay for several years, much of which were spent behind the bar in Fay’s along Granard’s Main Street.

Making her own contribution, Cllr Ann Farrelly said she would remember Carmel Fay as both pleasant and someone who always had a smile on her face.
