Edgeworthstown houses evacuated as Army Bomb Disposal Team make two improvised explosive devices safe

An Army Bomb Disposal Team was called to Edgeworthstown, Co Longford this afternoon to deal with a suspect device.

An Army Bomb Disposal Team made safe two potentially dangerous Improvised Explosive Devices (IED’s) in Edgeworthstown earlier this afternoon.

The Defence Forces deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team in response to a request from An Garda Síochána after two suspect devices were found at a private residence on the Bracklin Road, Edgeworthstown.

A cordon and road closures were put in place for public safety, while a number of nearby houses were evacuated.

The team arrived on scene at 2.35 pm. The devices were made safe at the scene without the need for a controlled explosion and were brought to a safe military location for further examination.

All component parts and evidence will be handed over to the Gardaí to assist them with their investigation into the incident.

The scene was declared safe at 3.45 pm.
