Longford Tidy Towns Chairperson Andy O’Dowd was honoured in a ‘This is Your Life’ style tribute event last Friday evening.
Hosted by the Town Council to thank Andy for his hard work and dedication over the years, the event saw councillors, members of Longford Tidy Towns, friends and family gather to pay tribute to the local man.
“I found out about it on Friday night at approximately 7.30pm,” Andy laughs.
Earlier in the day, Andy had been invited to a civic reception for the Dead of Night Halloween Festival. When the presentations were finished, Andy was told to return to the offices for 7pm, where there would be a small celebration for Longford Town, having received a bronze medal in the national Tidy Towns competition.
Less than an hour later, Andy was escorted back to the building which was packed with members of the local community.
“I got tongue-tied,” he admits.
Town Mayor Paul Connell spoke about Andy’s achievements with Longford Tidy Towns, before he and Town Clerk Dan Rooney presented Andy with the prestigious red book, adding those famous words “this is your life”.
“It turned out to be one hell of a night,” Andy proclaims happily. “I really enjoyed it!”
Andy is keen to express a “huge thank you” to the Town Clerk and Mayor, the Councillors and the Executive of the Town Council for organising a “really special” night. Thanks also go to Tidy Towns members and volunteers for their hard work.
“I felt very honoured and very proud,” Andy concluded.
