“Longford Town Council and Granard Town Council; talking shops is what they are, and especially Granard Town Council, a glorified talking shop is what that is,” remarked Cllr Séan Farrell (FG) during a discussion on Town Councils at a recent monthly meeting of Longford Co Council.
“Two questions I have right now - why this? Why now? All this talk about the abolition of Longford Town Council and Granard Town Council which is a glorified talking shop; if we ask ourselves what services are supplied by Longford Town Council, for example, we get that it is a housing authority.
“What is there from Granard? A glorified talking shop, that is all it is. Services like infrastructure are provided for by Longford County Council, so what exactly is the purpose of Longford Town Council?”
Cllr Farrell went on to say that a local authority that couldn’t “even get the parking situation in the town sorted”, left a lot to be desired, referring to remarks in a recent edition of the Longford Leader made by businessowners about “parking problems” and the need for two local authorities in a small town.
