Deputy Willie Penrose has welcomed the announcement by Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Pat Rabbitte TD, that he is introducing the roll-out of high speed broadband to all the second level schools across the country.

“This initiative by the Government, which is being spearheaded by Minister Rabbitte, will make a considerable contribution to new teaching methods, boost learning opportunities for all students, including those with learning difficulties and will ultimately make a major contribution to competitiveness for the workforce of the future,” Deputy Penrose said this week.

“I am especially pleased to learn that all secondary schools in both Westmeath and Longford will be enabled with high speed broadband before the beginning of the academic term in September of this year and I am in no doubt that these schools will be especially pleased with this important development,” Deputy Penrose concluded.

The national roll-out will be completed in three stages, with 200 schools being connected by next September in the first phase, and a further 200 being connected in 2013 with the remaining 250 schools being connected in 2014.
