Gardai in Granard are investigating a serious car crash in Edgeworthstown over the weekend which left a teenager in a critical condition in hospital.

Another man, also in his late teens and from the Mullingar area, sustained relatively minor injuries in the single vehicle incident along a stretch of the N55 Ballymahon to Edgeworthstown road during the early hours of last Saturday morning.

Both men were just outside the mid Longford town when the car in which they were travelling skidded into a ditch just yards from a railway crossing at around 1am.

It's understood the driver, who is from the Carrickboy area, suffered a number of broken bones as well as internal injuries in the crash.

He was transferred later that evening to the Mater Hospital in Dublin where he remains in a critical condition, Gardai said on Monday.

The other front seat passenger has since been discharged from hospital.
