A 42-year-old Longford man was in custody in Belgium this week facing charges of extortion and membership of a criminal gang. The Co Longford man was arrested by police a number of weeks ago following a chase which, according to sources, began in Holland and culminated in neighbouring Belgium.
The Leader has since learned Belgian prosecutors have charged the Longford man with participation in a crime organisation, swindling, breach of trust and attempt to swindle.
So far, details of the Longford man’s initial arrest remain sketchy, although a spokesperson confirmed this week detectives were working on the understanding the offences may have originated in Holland.
It has also emerged the man was tracked down in the popular northern city of Bruges almost five weeks ago. It is not known if he has come before the courts or when formal prosecution proceedings are likely to commence as efforts to speak with federal police investigators in Belgium last week failed.
