Local girl secures two prestigious awards from TCD

One north Longford student is celebrating in earnest this festive season after securing no less than two prestigious academic awards from Trinity College Dublin (TCD).
22-year-old Kate McInerney – daughter of Lil and Marty – who hails from Moyne, received ‘The Crawford Award’ for the overall highest marks in a Post Graduate Diploma in Education and the ‘ASTI Award’ for the highest marks in teaching practice from Professor Carmel O’Sullivan during her graduation ceremony at the end of last year. The local girl is one of the first students to ever win both awards and is now earning herself an esteemed reputation within the education circuit, it has to be said.
“Well I was shocked to win the awards,” Ms McInerney told the Leader. “I honestly didn’t know that they existed. I didn’t even go up to get my results the day they were out – I was waiting to get them by post. The next thing was, the head of the Department in Trinity rang me to see where I was, and to explain that I had won the two awards – I couldn’t believe it.”
The high achiever said that she had always wanted to be a secondary school teacher, specialising in Maths and Geography. Upon completion of her second level studies at Moyne Community School, Ms McInerney embarked on a Humanities Degree at St Pat’s in Dromcondra and it was from there, three years later that she enrolled on the Post Graduate Diploma in Education at TCD. “I always wanted to be a teacher and I went to St Pat’s first where I studied Maths and Geography for three years,” the local woman continued. “I was never one to stress out, so I decided then to do the Post Grad in Trinity; that was very interesting and I got the place on the course through interview. I was one of the youngest people there, because I went straight from St Pat’s onto the course, and most of those on the course would have had experience behind them.”
From there, Ms McInerney’s journey took her to her St Benildus in Stillorgan, Co Dublin where she engaged in her teaching practice with enthusiasm and gusto. “I never found the course or the teaching practice stressful,” she added. “The teaching practice was three days a week and I really enjoyed the experience. I am working at the moment, so I regard myself as one of the lucky ones. I got a one year contact and I’m teaching maths at Warrenmount, Dublin 8, so I am really delighted with that opportunity.”
