It was a sad and poignant afternoon last Wednesday at council headquarters in Longford town where a special Mass was held to remember the late Cllr Paddy Belton (FG) who died suddenly last month at the age of 68.

Longford author on the rise

Alan McMonagle from Longford has been receiving great acclaim for his writing, both at home and internationally. The poet, playwright and short fiction writer from College Park has received awards from the Professional Artists Retreat, the Fundacion Valparaiso, the Banff Centre for Creativity and the Arts Council of Ireland. The writer, who is a son of Seamus and Jean, also received his MA in Writing from NUI Galway in 2007.

Longford actor’s promising career is no Stalemate

Longford actor Jamie McClean is set to play one of the lead roles in the Backstage Theatre’s Canal Studio production of ‘Stalemate’ – a new play written and directed by the theatre’s artist-in-residence, Seamus O’Rourke. The production, is currently being rehearsed ahead of its debut at Backstage this Thursday, May 16, after which the crew will embark on a nationwide tour.

Young virtuoso set for St John’s concert

Peter Regan from Lanesboro will be at the centre of a special evening of classical piano music at St John’s Church in Longford Town on Friday next, May 24. Old swimming pool to be demolished

Mayor says Town Council won’t turn out the lights

Longford Town Mayor, Peggy Nolan has reacted to rumours that the local authority could be prepared to switch off street lighting in certain areas of the town. A proposal was recently put before the Town Council which recommended the move as a cost-cutting measure.

Editorial: Saving the local post office

This weekend’s Irish Postmasters’ Union Annual Conference once again shone a light on the dire challenges faced by management and staff at hundreds of post offices in Ireland today. The IPU is claiming that the new tender from the Department of Social Protection to be released next week will effectively force people into having their social welfare payments paid directly into bank accounts. The IPU says that this will cut post offices out of the equation, threatening the network’s survival.

Preparations are currently underway for Longford County Choir’s eagerly anticipated first concert of 2013. The upcoming performance will take place in St Mel’s Cathedral Centre, Longford on Sunday, May 26 at 7pm sharp and is sure to appeal to a wide ranging audience. A varied repertoire is planned for the evening, with the main work being ‘The Armed Man: A Mass For Peace’ by Karl Jenkins.

Town council has 12 projects in pipeline

Longford Town Council announced last week that it is to restore a number of cottages on the site of Connolly Barracks. The town authority also indicated its intention to engage in a further 11 infrastructural projects before town council’s are abolished in mid 2014.Included in the plan of action is an additional car park at St Mel’s Cathedral and the redevelopment of the junction at the site. Out of €1.4m set aside for the projects, €183,000 has also been allocated for the purchase of additional land at the Mall Complex in the heart of Longford town, while €158,000 will be spent upgrading the footpaths along the town’s main thoroughfare.
