Organisers behind a south Longford community’s bid to be crowned Europe’s cleanest and most environmentally friendly village are to travel to the Netherlands on Friday morning as this year’s winning entry is formally announced.

Philip Butler, chairman of Abbeyshrule’s Tidy Villages Committee this week spoke of his excitement at the imminent unveiling of the 2012 Entente Florale Europe competition winners and of the village’s hugely successful presentation which was held last month.

“There was nothing more we could have done. All that could be done was done. Between the day and everything else, it was just brilliant,” he said.

Mr Butler, alongside his fellow committee members, will jet out to Venlow, the Netherlands next month to learn just how well jury members from the European Association for Flowers and Landscape viewed their entry following a day long series of events on August 2.

The Tidy Towns official said the day, which was held in conjunction with the village’s pursuit for yet further recognition at national level, was one that involved almost every aspect of local community life in Abbeyshrule.

“From the built to the natural environment, everything was covered and they (jury members) were highly impressed by the schools that took part. All in all, the jury feedback to us was very positive,” he added.

Now, all eyes switch to the south-eastern Dutch city of Venlow, in what could be a memorable couple of days for Abbeyshrule as it goes in search of domestic as well international acclaim.
