Google Maps relocate Longford once more
Google Maps have rediscovered Longford... but they've mislaid Edgeworthstown
The proud residents of Prospect Wood are no doubt crestfallen as their fifteen minutes of, predominantly web-based, fame is at the end.
In the past twenty-four hours, Google Maps’ chiefs have capitulated in the face of an intolerable public firestorm and restored Longford Town to its position of pre-eminence within the county. The Longford Leader played a key role in delivering this shame-faced about-turn from the, hitherto faceless, automatons beyond the Google Maps machine.
We drew attention to the fact that Longford Town was relegated to the status of a small, insignificant townland while the admittedly lovely Prospect Wood, an estate built ten years ago at the height of the Celtic Tiger, in the middle of Bertie Ahern and Fianna Fail’s finest hour no less, was highlighted as a major port-of-call, a bustling town centre, replete with its own post-office for instance (coincidentally located roughly where one would find the post office in Longford).
Google Maps have also restored Athlone to the map, an unfortunate by-product of our campaign, but never mind. Let us rejoice that the historic town of Longford, a town which can be traced back to the 1400s, has been restored to the map.
