Longford Slashers . . . . 1-3
Ray Donlon reporting from Glennon Brothers Pearse Park
Northern Gaels proved far too strong for Longford Slashers when after a strong second half performance they registered a comprehensive victory in the Minor Football League Division 1 Final on Sunday evening last at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park with the town club only managing a solitary point in the second half.
Slashers got off to the best possible start when Ruairi Clarke made no mistake when firing the ball to the back of the net after two minutes with Northern Gaels first point coming from Rian Brady after four minutes. The Abbeylara/Mullinalaghta U-18s followed that up with two further points from Russell Brady and David McGivney.
Slashers went in front once again on eighteen minutes when Robert Clarke pointed a free. Two minutes later Cian Kavanagh slotted over a well struck point from play for the townies with Northern Gaels narrowing the margin back to one before the break with Conor Berry on the mark, leaving the scoreline at 1-2 to 0-4.
A revitalised Northern Gaels side came out in the second half and completely dominated for the entire thirty minutes with points coming from Rian Brady (4) and David McGivney (3) while Russell Brady, Jayson Matthews, Nigel Rabbitte and Aidan McElligott also shot over the bar.
McGivney and Russell Brady got the second half goals for the most emphatic winners. Slashers solitary second half point came in the closing minutes with Robert Clarke on target from play.
