2009 County Champions Clonguish are back in the county final following their comprehensive 1-19 to 1-7 win over Fr Manning Gaels on Sunday.
The Newtownforbes side, heavily fancied to advance to the last two prior to throw-in, took a while to get going and the sides were level at 0-5 each just past the midway point of the first half.
However, their superiority began to show in the closing stages that first 30 minutes when they first over a series of points to lead 0-10 to 0-6.
Clonguish finally asserted their control on the game with an early goal through Joe O’Brien and further points from key marksmen Paul Barden (who finished with 0-5) and Paddy Dowd (who scored 0-4).
They now await the winners from next Sunday evening’s other semi-final between current champions Longford Slashers and the 2010 champions Colmcille, who overcame Killoe Young Emmets in Saturday evening’s replay, in what turned out to be another tight contest.
It was a good weekend all round for Clonguish, who also clinched the Senior B title with a 2-6 to 1-8 win over Mostrim. The key goals that guided them to their win were scored by Ian O’Reilly and former Roscommon star Derek Duggan.
In soccer, Longford Town had to come from one down to secure an away win against Wexford Youths on Saturday evening last. The win comes as a welcome boost ahead of this Saturday’s FAI Cup clash with Bohemians.
