Two goals in the second half from Shane Kiernan guided Mostrim to a somewhat surprising but deserved win over Mullinalaghta in the final game in the opening round of the Senior Championship at Lynch Park in Abbeylara on Sunday evening last.

Mullinalaghta played well in the first half but were dealt a massive blow in the 25th minute when JJ Matthews had to go off injured and in the second half they failed to make any kind of impact on the game.

Rian Brady got the first point of the game in the 1st minute before Brian Farrell levelled with a fine point. Shane Kiernan put Mostrim ahead in the 8th minute but a great Rian Brady point drew the game level. Points were then traded between David McGivney and Gerard Smith before St. Columba’s grabbed a goal in the 21st minute. Eric Sullivan’s effort came off the post and the ball fell to Kevin Mulligan who made no mistake to leave his side 1-3 to 0-3 ahead at the break.

Three minutes into the second half the sides were level again when Shane Kiernan got his first goal and it gave Mostrim a big boost. In the 41st minute they got their second goal and it was a poor goal to concede from St. Columba’s point of view.

A ’45 from Cillian Lynn came off a Mullinalaghta defender, the ball bobbled and fell to Ciaran Gallagher whose shot came off another defender and crossed the line.

One minute later Martin Coyle followed up with a point. Donie McElligott replied with a point and then three minutes later an excellent long range point from Kevin Mulligan closed the gap to two points but that was to be Mullinalaghta’s final score of the game. Mostrim then clinched the win; substitute Luke Kelly with the pass and Shane Kiernan with a fantastic finish.
