St. Mel’s North Leinster Colleges Senior ‘A’ Football League Round 2 game against Athlone Community College finished up all square at the St. Brigid’s GAA grounds in Kiltoom, Co Roscommon on Friday last.
The Longford College appeared on course for their second victory in the competition when they held a five points lead at the break. But Athlone CC stepped up another gear in the second half and managed to snatch a draw with the aid of some dubious decisions by the referee. St. Mel’s started well and raced into the lead thanks to a brace of points from Paddy Kiernan along with a converted free from his fellow Killoe clubman Larry Moran.
After eight minutes Moran was unlucky not to score a goal when his shot was cleared off the line but St. Mel’s eventually found the back of the Athlone net when Killian Farrell finished off a glorious move.
Athlone CC came storming back in the second half to close the gap but St. Mel’s looked to have got the winning score when Killian Farrell shot over the bar, only for the opposition to land the equalising point with practically the last kick of the game.
