Longford minors
make winning start

Longford got their 2013 minor campaign of to a winning start in St. Loman’s Lakepoint Park on Saturday last in the first round of the Leinster League.
 Westmeath, who were short a number of players still involved in the Leinster Colleges Championship, had the wind advantage in the first half but were slow to start with Longford notching up 1-2 without reply in the opening 10 minutes with points from Liam Sullivan and a Larry Moran free and Rian Brady finding the net following a good move involving seven players.

The goal woke up Westmeath and from there to half-time they outscored Longford 1-5 to 0-2 with Moran and Sullivan again on target for the visitors. The Longford defence found opposing attackers Luke Loughlin And Darren Giles a handful as Westmeath led at the break 1-5 to 1-4 .

With the wind in their favour in the second half, Longford held the upper hand and from the throw-in Nigel Rabbitte finished off a good move with a point. Both sides started to make numerous changes and the game was made safe with a Larry Moran goal with 10 minutes remaining.

Longford face Munster champions Tipperary at a Longford venue next Saturday in Round 2 and manager Martin Mulleady will know that his charges will have to up their game from the display against Westmeath if they are to register another win in Group C.
