A Martin Nevin goal in the 48th minute guided Longford Slashers to a narrow one point win over Mostrim in this exciting Senior Championship Round 2 clash at Monaduff, Drumlish on Sunday evening last.

It was a crucial score because it gave Slashers the lead and they pushed on from there to stage a great escape after trailing by five points at one stage in the first half.

Colin Smith and Cillian Lynn exchanged early frees before Niall Mulligan played a lovely ball into Philip Dobson and he got Slashers second point. Mulligan then followed that up with a neat score.

Mostrim hit back and points from Brian Farrell and Shane Kiernan levelled the game by the 13th minute. A great score from the influential Farrell in the 17th minute edged Mostrim ahead but Peter Foy levelled for Slashers.

Farrell then hit over another point to restore Mostrim’s lead and there was two between them in the 22nd minute when Gerard Smith got on the scoresheet. Mostrim extended their lead one minute later when David Morgan found the back of the net with a fine finish.

Three frees from the boot of Colin Smith got Slashers back into contention by the 28th minute but then Shane Kiernan pointed to leave Mostrim leading by 1-7 to 0-7 at the break. But five minutes into the second half Slashers were on level terms thanks to three good points from Peter Foy.

Scores from Brian Farrell and Shane Kiernan gave Mostrim a two point advantage by the 40th minute before Martin Nevin replied for Slashers. Two points from Cillian Lynn gave Mostrim a three point lead in the 43rd minute.

But then Slashers began to get on top. Two more frees from Colin Smith closed the gap before Nevin grabbed the crucial goal that put his side in front and another Smith free followed in the 49th minute.

Slashers failed to register another score as Mostrim hit back with a point apiece from Thomas Gallagher and Shane Kiernan but the unlucky losers just could not engineer the equaliser they deserved.
