For the first 10 minutes of the Senior Championship Round 2 game in Keenan Park, Ardagh on Thursday evening last Killashee were competitive, in fact they held a two point lead but completely fell apart when Abbeylara grabbed their opening goal in the 16th minute.

After falling to a heavy defeat (30 points) to Dromard in Round 1, this was always going to be another demoralising defeat for Killashee. This game will have served no purpose for Abbeylara apart from boosting their scores difference.

Killashee made a bright start and fired over the first two points through Francis Dolan and Mark Rossiter. Two points from Jason Kelly (one free) levelled for Abbeylara in the 4th minute before Killashee restored their two point advantage, Emmet Skelly and Rossiter on target but they failed to register another score.

Abbeylara levelled again with points from Kelly (free) and Brian Smyth and then Kelly grabbed the first goal to open the floodgates. Kelly was a constant threat to Killashee in clocking up the impressive total of 4-8.

Two points from Kelly (one free) and one apiece from Sean Murphy and Barry Smyth put seven between the sides in the 25th minute and then Kelly scored his second goal.

Another point from Murphy and a third goal from Kelly gave Abbeylara a 14 point lead at the break, 3-9 to 0-4. Donal Ledwith’s side were ruthless and didn’t let up on the scoring in the second half. Barry and Brian Smyth landed points before Kelly (2) and a nice point from Colm E Smyth extended the lead. Kelly scored his fourth goal minutes later before Cormac Smyth got in on the goalscoring act in the 45th minute. Such was Abbeylara’s dominance the ball didn’t get past midfield and they finished the game with another 2-3 to run out landslide winners by 34 points in a real rout.
