Abbeylara scored a comfortable win over a disappointing Mullinalaghta outfit at Lynch Park on Sunday last in advancing to meet Longford Slashers in the Leader Cup semi-final and from the moment Colm E Smyth fired home the decisive only goal in the 21st minute of the first half the writing was on the wall for St. Columba’s.

Minus the services of the currently emigrated Kevin Mulligan, this was a poor performance by Mullinalaghta who trailed by seven points at the break (1-5 to 0-1) and were guilty of squandering several chances when they eventually began to make some sort of impact with the advantage of the wind in the second half.

At least there was some good news for St. Columba’s as their talented county U-21 forward JJ Matthews returned to action after a lengthy injury absence stretching back to last April and he landed a terrific point from a tight angle in the closing stages of this generally one-sided local derby that failed to live up to expectations.
