It was honours even in the Intermediate Football Championship Round 2 game at Leo Casey Park in Ballymahon on Sunday last as Carrickedmond and Rathcline played out a draw in a game that failed to spark into life.

The final few minutes did see some excitement but both sides were guilty of squandering chances to claim the win.

In a tight opening quarter the sides were level on four occasions. James Hanley opened the scoring in the 1st minute with a point but John Burns fired over a free two minutes later to draw Carrickedmond level.

Points were exchanged between Mel Shanley and Burns before a free from Tom Cummins edged Carrickedmond ahead by a point in the 7th minute. A great effort from Marty Mulvey was sandwiched in between two points from Patrick Mullooly (one free) before Francis Kelly put Carrickedmond back in front in the 15th minute.

In a 10 minute spell before the break both sides tagged on two more points to their scores to leave Carrick ahead by one; 0-7 to 0-6.

They stretched that lead to three points in the opening 11 minutes of the second half but Rathcline replied with a free from Shanley and a fortuitous long range effort from Mullooly in the 43rd minute which with the help of the strong wind ended up in the back of the net for a crucial goal.

A John Burns free levelled the game for Carrickedmond in the 53rd minute and three minutes later an excellent point from Padraig McGrath put them in front but they couldn’t add on further scores.

In the final minute of normal time Patrick Mullooly equalised from a free. Both sides just couldn’t get the winner in additional time. Rathcline finished with 14 men as Cathal Greene received a second yellow card at the end.
