A scintillating first half display of football set Longford on their way to a comprehensive win over Wicklow and book their place in the Leinster Intermediate Championship Final against London at the end of July.

The game at Emmet Park in Killoe on Sunday last was all over at half-time with Longford leading by 4-11 to 0-1 and they were really lethal in front of the posts.

Longford controlled the game from start to finish and had built up a six point lead by the 10th minute with points from Claire Greene (free), Sarah Tierney, Emer Heaney and a goal from Anne Marie Bratten.

Wicklow’s only reply was a pointed free from Lucy Mulhall before Longford again dominated. Sharon Treacy (two) and three points from Greene (two frees) stretched the lead which was extended further when Heaney found the back of the net.

Wicklow were down to 14 in the 26th minute when Sarah Jane Winders was sinbinned. Longford were ruthless and substitute Keri Harmon got the third goal in the 30th minute. Elizabeth Brady scored the fourth goal in additional time to give Longford a landslide 22 point lead at the break.

Keri Harmon and Elizabeth Brady got early second half points as Longford added a further 1-8 to their most emphatic tally. Also on target was Sarah Tierney (2) and Emer Kiernan.

Longford midfielder Siobhan McGowan was sinbinned six minutes from time before Wicklow registered a few consolation scores. The final score of this completely one-sided contest came from Longford substitute Aisling Reynolds.
