Defending Division 1 league champions Dromard came from five points down to register their first win of the current campaign at the Laurels on Saturday.

When Shane Mulligan scored a goal for the Mullinalaghta in the 21st minute to put four between the sides it looked like they would win but Dromard battled back to trail by 1-3 to 0-4 at the break.

The game changed in Dromard’s favour in the 43rd minute when Declan Mimnagh got a goal and they seized the initiative after that.

Dromard were guilty of wasteful shooting early on and it was St Columba’s who made a bright start. Donie McElligott and David McGivney (free) got their opening points while Dromard registered their first point in the 16th minute through Peter Reynolds.

Five minutes later Mullinalaghta grabbed a goal when Shane Mulligan’s long ball in ended up in the back of the net. A great point from David McGivney put St Columba’s ahead by five, 1-3 to 0-1, in the 22nd minute but that was to be their final score of the first half.

Dromard then got on top and scores from Francis McGee (free), Michael O’Reilly and Padraig Martin left them two points down at the interval.

Enda Macken’s charges started the second half really well and points from Emmet Masterson and McGee (2) edged them 0-7 to 1-3 ahead before Donie McElligott replied for Columba’s.

But in the 43rd minute Declan Mimnagh raised the green flag for Dromard and while David McGivney replied with a free for St Columba’s, the visitors fired over three points in a row through Emmet Masterson (a lovely score) and a brace from Francis McGee frees.

Mullinalaghta were finding it hard to get scores with Dromard defending very well. While the home side got a point in the 49th minute when McGivney converted a free that turned out to be their final score of the game.

Both sides had chances in the final minutes to get scores but it wasn’t until the 60th minute that the next score materialised; Ross McNerney was fouled and he slotted the free over the bar to leave five points between the sides in the finish.
