It was another poor performance from Colmcille and they never really challenged Abbeylara throughout this game.

It was Abbeylara full-back Colm P Smyth who got the game’s first point in the 7th minute. Colmcille were level in the 9th minute when Barry McKeon found John Paul Reilly and he landed a point.

Abbeylara were back in front in the 17th minute when Jason Kelly pointed a free after Nigel Rabbitte was fouled. Barry McKeon then set up Niall Farley for a point in the 20th minute. In the 26th minute Abbey went in front by four points when Mickey O’Connor found the back of the net in a goalmouth scramble following a Jason Kelly free.

Abbeylara went in at the break five points in front, 1-4 to 0-2, when Nigel Rabbitte fired over an excellent score.

Seven minutes into the second half the home side extended their lead when Jason Kelly got his second point and then two frees from the boot of Robbie Smyth put Maurice O’Connor’s side in a commanding advantage by the 44th minute.

After failing to score since the 20th minute, Colmcille got their third point in the 47th minute when sub Cathal Reilly hit over a neat point. Jason Kelly restored Abbeylara’s eight point advantage in the 49th minute before Colmcille wing-back Noel Farrell replied with a score one minute later.

Colmcille knew they needed a goal to have any chance of avoiding defeat and in the 50th minute Paul McKeon dragged his shot wide. Cathal Reilly got a point before John Paul Reilly blasted his effort wide in the 55th minute as Colmcille applied some pressure. Barry McKeon then hit over a free to cut the gap to five in the 56th minute.

Abbeylara had chances but kicked a few wides while Colmcille sub Ruairi Harkin and Barry McKeon converted a free apiece in the closing stages of the game for a couple of consolation scores in a disappointing defeat.
