Clonguish Senior Ladies brought their footballing year to a close by adding a Championship trophy to the Division 1 League trophy after a close match against Rathcline on Sunday last.
We were minus the service of a number of key players so it was a great credit to the girls to get over the line in a tense finish as both teams strived to get the winning score. Siobhan McGowan had a tremendous game throughout and pointed with time almost up to leave the final score: Clonguish 2-8 Rathcline 3-4.
Clonguish played with the wind in the first half and led by 1-7 to 2-2 at half time, the goal (contender for goal of the season) coming from Cliona Allen who made her first full debut for the senior team. Aisling Greene pushed us five points clear with a goal midway through the second half but Rathcline rallied well to level the game scoring an unanswered goal and two points with five minutes left. It looked anyone’s game at this stage until Siobhan rescued us. County Chairperson Dolores Kieran presented the cup to Mairead Moore who was captain in the absence of Marie Brady who suffered a serious knee injury early on in the championship. All players played their part in this victory especially Sinead Macken, Mairead Moore, Aoife Darcy, Oonagh Shanley and the three McGowan’s. A special word of thanks to our dedicated team mentors Denis Quinn, Ciaran Woods and Fergus Darcy who guided us to silverware in both league and championship. Here’s to 2015. Have a good rest ladies and be raring to go in the New Year!
