Missed chances cost Longford dearly as they lost to neighbouring rivals Leitrim in the Ladies National Football League Division 3 clash at the St. Mary’s grounds in Carrick-on-Shannon on Sunday last.

In fact, Longford failed to register a solitary score in the first half as they trailed by 1-6 to 0-0 at the break and were always facing a real uphill battle on the changeover.

Longford started well and put pressure on Leitrim from the throw-in and got themselves a free in the first minute but failed to convert it. Longford doninated the first five minutes but could not register a score.

Then Leitrim just seemed to find a higher gear and Aine Tighe proved to be the thorn in Longford’s side in the first half. Tighe scored two points in the 5th and 7th minutes and then 30 seconds later Michelle Heslin struck home Leitrim’s first goal. Further points followed from Deirdre Ward and Aine Heslin.

For the remainder of the first half Longford just could not break down the resolute Leitrim defence and Aine Tighe fired over two more points to leave the home county in a comfortable position at the break, leading by 1-6 to 0-0.

Leitrim increased their advantage when they got the first two scores of the second half with points from Anna Conlon and Deirdre Ward. But Longford eventually found their form and for the next 10 minutes put considerable pressure on Leitrim who gave away five frees which were converted by Claire Greene.

Then within the space of two minutes Longford were denied what looked like two certain goal chances, only to be saved and knocked out for 45’s instead. Leitrim found the Longford net again with a goal from Aine Heslin, a real killer blow, which was followed up by four points - two apiece from Aine Tighe and Aileen Maguire.

Claire Greene converted another free for the visitors and substitute Sarah Tierney registered Longford’s only score from play in what was a disappointing display and they now face a most difficult game against Armagh on Sunday next with Abbey CBS Newry the venue.
