Slashers and Mullinalaghta all square

MULLINALAGHTA ST. COLUMBA’S . . . . . . . . . . . . 0-9

Longford Slashers had to rely on two late Mark Diffley points to secure a draw against Mullinalaghta St. Columba’s in the crucial top-of-the-table Division 1 league clash at Michael Fay Park on Saturday evening last.

The big talking point of the game centred around Peter Foy’s dismissal midway through the second half following a dangerous tackle on Mullinalaghta’s Shane Mulligan. Foy went for a 50/50 ball but referee Patrick Maguire adjudged that Foy’s tackle was late and duly sent him off.

Slashers were thwarted on a number of occasions by a resilient St. Columba’s defence as gilt edged goal scoring opportunities were wasted and both Martin Tarmey and Martin Nevin should have scored second half goals.

Slashers started well and Nevin pointed them into an early lead. But the visitors hit back with two fine Kevin Mulligan efforts after 10 minutes. However, excellent points from Diffley and Niall Mulligan restored the home side’s advantage midway through the first half.

St. Columba’s took over at this stage but could only add a Conor McElligott point before Nevin restored Slashers lead with a 20th minute score. However, Gerry Fox’s charges hit the front when first Shane Mulligan and then JJ Matthews pointed. However, David Sheridan flicked over a late leveller for Slashers to leave it 0-5 to 0-5 at the break.

St. Columba’s were next to score in the 38th minute thanks to a fine Gary Rogers effort. A long range free from Kevin Mulligan was followed by a neat point from county minor David McGivney to extend the Mullinalaghta lead.

However, despite their numerical disadvantage after Foy’s dismissal Slashers responded with points from Martin Nevin and Colin Smith to leave the minimum between the sides entering the closing stages.

St. Columba’s looked to have clinched a win when JJ Matthews pointed in the 55th minute but Slashers snatched a draw thanks to two late scores from Mark Diffley and ensured that both sides remain unbeaten in the league this season in a tight battle for the Division 1 title.

Scorers - Slashers: M Diffley and M Nevin 0-3 each. N Mulligan, D Sheridan and C Smith (free) 0-1 each. St. Columba’s: K Mulligan 0-3 (one free). JJ Matthews 0-2. S Mulligan, C McElligott, G Rogers and D McGivney 0-1 each.
