Longford Slashers junior side captured the Division 3 league title with a hard fought win over Colmcille in the final played in terrible wet conditions at Emmet Park, Killoe on Saturday night last.

Ruairi Clarke’s goal in the early stages of the second half set Slashers on their way in a game that was played in a good sporting manner despite the lashing rain and credit must go to both sides in most difficult conditions.

Colmcille had been in control up until that goal and it certainly turned the game in Slashers favour. Colmcille scored just one point after that while Slashers tagged on a further four points to emerge victorious.

It took eight minutes for the opening score of the game, Sean Clarke pointing for Slashers. Two minutes later Colmcille replied with Mark Mulligan pointing a free after Niall Hudson was fouled.

Six minutes elapsed before the next score of the game. Tommy Doyle hit over a free for Colmcille and Niall Hudson followed up with a good point.

Slashers had possession but were wasteful while Colmcille were more clinical and in the 18th minute they stretched their lead to three when Tommy Doyle pointed another free.

Patrick Farrell very nearly scored a goal for Slashers in the 21st minute but his powerful shot was tipped over the crossbar for a point by Colmcille keeper Colm Kilbride. James Martin scored a point for the sky-blues one minute later to cut the gap to the minimum of margins.

Colmcile led at the break 0-4 to 0-3 and extended the advantage a minute into the second half when Joseph Mulligan pointed before Ciaran Farrell (free) replied for Slashers.

The decisive score of the game came in the 34th minute when Ruairi Clarke got the goal for Slashers. Colmcille replied with a pointed free from Tommy Doyle but that was to be their final score of the game.

Patrick Farrell fired over a good point for Slashers in the 39th minute and then James Martin shot over the bar moments later to put three between the sides.

Another Ciaran Farrell free in the 49th minute extended Slashers lead to four. Colmcille had chances but just couldn’t get the scores they needed to get back into the game.

One minute from time, Ciaran Farrell hit over a fine score to leave Slashers five points in front at the final whistle.
