In the refixed Ladies National Football League Division 3 game played on the astroturf pitch at Abbey CBS in Newry on Sunday last, a young Longford team found the going too tough against a much stronger Armagh outfit who ran out convincing winners.
Longford just could not come to grips with a strong wind which was blowing across the field and Armagh kicked eight points in the first half through Fionnuala McKenna (3), Siobhan Mackle (2), Lauren McConville (2) and Niamh Henderson while Longford’s solitary reply was a free converted by Claire Greene.
Longford were denied a goal by the crossbar from a cracking Sabrina Hackett shot just before the break. Armagh got a crucial goal to hold a commanding 1-8 to 0-1 lead.
Again in the second half Longford battled hard but Armagh got another killer goal from Fionnuala McKenna.
Aoife Darcy got Longford’s first point of the second half and the midlanders had two shots on goal which went narrowly wide.
Armagh followed with points from McKenna and Aoife McCoy. Longford players Claire Greene, Aoife Darcy and Siobhan McGowan added further points. Fifteen minutes into the second half Orla Noonan (Longford) and Louise Kenny (Armagh) had to leave the field dazed after a clash of heads.
Following this Longford got a goal from Claire Delaney, only for Armagh to follow up with another goal. Longford got three further points through Claire Greene and Sabrina Hackett (2) and Armagh finished the game with a point from Catherine Marley.
