A goal from Paul Barden two minutes from time saw Clonguish snatch victory and it was a cruel blow for unlucky Colmcille in the first round of the Senior Football Championship at Emmet Park, Killoe on Sunday last.

Colmcille will be annoyed with the way they cheaply gave away possession in the lead-up to that crucial goal. They tried to get back into the game but with time running out they couldn’t get the scores.

In the opening four minutes points were traded between David Barden and Paul McKeon before Clonguish took a hold on the game. Two excellent points from Paul Barden put them ahead by the 7th minute but Colmcille were level by the 16th minute courtesy of two Barry McKeon frees.

Paddy Dowd replied with a pointed free before points from Gerard Mulligan and Barry McKeon put Colmcille ahead by the 21st minute. Dowd levelled matters minutes later before Colmcille could have grabbed a goal but Paul McKeon’s effort was deflected out for a ’45.

A great point from Barry McKeon put his side ahead again in the 28th minute (0-6 to 0-5) and just before the break Clonguish created a goal chance but Ciaran Williams effort was saved by Colmcille keeper Mark Kiernan.

Two frees from Paddy Dowd in the early stages of the second half put Clonguish in front but just like before Colmcille replied; Declan Farrell with a lovely point.

Colmcille took the lead again in the 45th minute with a free from Barry McKeon and minutes later they went two ahead with a free from Declan Reilly. But in the 58th minute they gave the ball away and Clonguish were able to break. Ciaran Williams did well to pass to Paul Barden who had one thing on his mind and he fired a powerful shot to the net for the winning goal.
