Longford Slashers U-18 ladies team went on a goal spree in cruising to a most emphatic win over St. Helen’s (Drumlish/Ballinamuck) in the Minor ‘A’ Football Championship Final at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Sunday morning last.
Slashers set out their marker with two early goals from Mary Sloane, the first just 30 seconds after the throw-in and the second six minutes later. St. Helen’s replied with a point from Laura Burke but that was to be their only score in the first half.
Orlagh O’Brien, Claire Farrell and Mary Sloane accounted for three further goals with Eimear and Orlagh O’Brien adding a point each to finish out the first half on a scoreline of Slashers 5-2 St. Helen’s 0-1.
There was no way back for St. Helen’s, who found the going far too tough against a strong Slashers side who piled on the pressure in the persistent wind and rain during the second half.
Further goals followed from Mary Sloane, Orlagh O’Brien (2) and Zena Coyle along with points from Eimear O’Brien (3), Orlagh O’Brien and Claire Farrell (2).
Despite the wide gap in the scoreline, St. Helen’s never gave up but could only managed to register two more points.
