Longford Ladies were defeated by Tipperary in the National League Division 3 game at the Moyle Rovers GAA Grounds in Tipperary on Sunday last with five points separating the sides in the finish.
The opening point of the game came from Tipperary’s Lorraine O’Shea, however Longford responded almost immediately with an effortless score from centrefield by Sinead Farrell. Both sides were evenly matched throughout, and although Tipperary ended the first half with a four point lead, Longford goalkeeper, Michelle Kilkenny made three fantastic consecutive saves which prevented the home side from pulling further ahead. At midfield, the partnership of Anne Marie Bratten and Gemma Kenny worked brilliantly and provided Longford with several scoring opportunities, resulting in scores from Claire Greene, Orla Noonan and Briona Connell.
Tipperary began the second half strong, scoring twice in the opening minutes of the restart. It seemed that it would be difficult for Longford to recover from the oppositions’ forceful attacking style, but players such as Mairead Moore responded with quality defending and prevented Tipperary from running away with the match. Longford showed great determination from beginning to end, unfortunately team spirit wasn’t enough. The tough weather conditions hindered their ability to add more to the scoreboard resulting in a disappointing loss for the Longford team.
Longford will face Offaly next Sunday 6th April in the final round of the league, time and venue yet to be decided.
