St. Mel’s held out to record a three points victory over St. Mary’s CBS, Mullingar in the opening round of the Leinster Colleges Senior ‘A’ Football League on Wednesday last at the Killoe grounds with well-taken goals from Killoe duo Liam Hughes and Larry Moran proving decisive.
St. Mary’s registered the first score when pointing from play in the 6th minute. St. Mel’s recorded their first point in the 8th minute when Dessie Reynolds slotted the ball over the bar while moments later Liam Hughes fired home a cracking goal.
The Mullingar college registered the next three points to level matters but St. Mel’s took the lead once again when Liam Hughes converted a free while Aidan Sheridan landed a point. St. Mary’s then notched another point but St. Mel’s finished the first half strongly with Larry Moran scoring a goal and a point to leave his side leading by 2-4 to 0-5 at the break.
St. Mary’s made a great start to the second half when registering three scores on the trot to close the gap but St. Mel’s consolidated their grip on the game with well struck points from Ciaran Donohue, John Hand and Larry Moran and a late Rory Sullivan score made sure of the victory.
