Superior Longford scored a comfortable win over London in Round 1 of the Ladies Leinster Intermediate Football Championship at Emmet Park on Saturday last.

A well-taken goal from Siobhan McGowan in the 26th minute left Longford leading by 1-6 to 0-2 at half-time with the points coming from Emer Heaney, Elizabeth Brady (2), Michelle Farrell (2) and Anne Marie Bratten.

And London’s slim chance of a comeback were completely dashed when Michelle Farrell grabbed the second goal for Longford with just three minutes gone on the changeover.

The home side went on to score five more points through Claire Greene (2), Elizabeth Brady, Emer Heaney and Sharon Treacy to run out easy winners in the finish.

London had taken an early lead with points from Hannah Noonan and Shona Barry but failed to register another score until the 59th minute when substitute Rebecca Mills shot over the bar.

Longford could afford the luxury of missing a penalty midway through the first half when Michelle Farrell shot wide and Diane O’Hora’s side are the red-hot favourites to retain the Leinster title.

Their other game in the round-robin is at home to Wicklow on July 7th and the Leinster Final will follow with Longford looking good to qualify directly for the All-Ireland Intermediate Championship quarter-finals in August.
