Bord Na Mona O’Byrne Cup Senior Football Tournament – Group A Round 2
Longford . . . . . . 1-14 UCD . . . . . . . 0-14
Longford scored their first win of the 2013 season when they got the better of UCD in the floodlit O’Byrne Cup Group A Round 2 fixture at Emmet Park, Killoe on Wednesday night and it was Cashel player Aidan Rowan who fired home the crucial only goal in first half stoppage time.
Inspired by impressive full-forward Robbie Smyth who fired over four points from play, Longford raced into a commanding 0-7 to 0-0 lead after 16 minutes of play but UCD gradually got their act together to close the gap.
However, a cracking goal from Rowan just before the break consolidated a grip on the game for the home county, who held a fairly comfortable 1-10 to 0-8 lead going into the second half.
And Glenn Ryan’s side managed to withstand a determined comeback by the students on the changeover with Donie Kingston (Laois) very much the dangerman in attack in ending up with a total of six points to his credit.
Longford play their remaining game in Group A of the O’Byrne Cup against Louth in Drogheda on Sunday next.
