Leinster Inter-County Vocational Schools Senior Football Championship Semi-Final

Longford . . . . . . . 1-11 Dublin . . . . . . 2-7

Ballyleague lad Diarmuid Murtagh, a student at Lanesboro Community College, proved to be the matchwinner as Longford staged a terrific late comeback to pip Dublin for a spot in the Leinster Inter-County Vocational Schools Senior Football Championship Final with just a solitary point separating the sides in the finish at Pairc Chiaran, Cashel on Saturday.

There appeared to be no way back for Longford when Dublin midfielder Conor Gallagher planted the ball in the back of the net to leave the visitors in a comfortable five points lead (2-7 to 0-8) with just nine minutes of normal time remaining but the home side refused to be rattled and showed a lot of character to register 1-3 without reply with all the scores coming from the deadly accurate Murtagh.

Just 30 seconds after Dublin have grabbed their second goal, engineered by their impressive full-forward Adam Rogers who clocked up a total of six points, Longford launched an immediate counter-attack with Rian Brady playing the perfect pass into the path of Murtagh who flicked the ball to the net from point-blank range.

Murtagh proceeded to fire over three glorious points – the last in the 58th minute as his side snatched a dramatic victory and can now look forward with confidence to the Leinster Final against Kildare on Saturday January 26th with the significant boost of having home advantage.
