Jamsie Martin and Francis McGee, scoring 11 points between them, led the way for Dromard as they recorded a hard fought win over a spirited Fr. Manning Gaels side at Emmet Park in Killoe on Thursday night last. Conditions were far from ideal for this Senior Football Championship Round 4 clash with a swirling wind and non-stop rain but credit to both sides who produced an enjoyable game of football.
Dromard had eight points to spare in the finish but the Gaels had chances near the end to cut the deficit. The only goal of the game came in the 60th minute with Diarmuid Masterson finding the back of the net with a little help from the butt of the post.
Just 15 seconds had elapsed when the Gaels opened the scoring with a point from Diarmuid Cooney but Dromard drew level in the 5th minute when Francis McGee got his first point of the game.
The Gaels then took a hold of the game and a free from Pete Collum (after he was fouled) in the 7th minute put them back in front and five minutes later they went ahead by two; Kevin Whelan with the point but he had the chance to go for a goal.
Whelan had another goal chance in the 13th minute but he fisted the ball wide. Jamsie Martin got on the scoresheet in the 15th minute for Dromard’s second point.
A great score from wing-back Mark Duffy restored the Gaels two point advantage but then the game swung in Dromard’s favour; scores from Cian Mimnagh and a Francis McGee free drew them level for the second time in the 21st minute.
Padraig Gill edged the Gaels ahead again in the 22nd minute before Dromard forward Gary Maguire forced Paddy Collum into making a good save to keep his net intact.
There was two in it again in the 26th minute when Diarmuid Cooney got his second point but Dromard responded with a brace of scores through Donal Sheridan and Francis McGee to level the game for the third time in the 28th minute.
Right before half-time Fr. Manning Gaels registered two excellent points from Padraig Gill and Sean Diffley to leave them leading by 0-8 to 0-6 at the break.
Dromard didn’t play particularly well in the first half but were a different proposition on the changeover. They hit four wides in a row before they got their first score of the second half in the 38th minute with a neat point from Jamsie Martin.
The game was all square again in the 40th minute when Cian Mimnagh shot over the bar and while the Gaels replied with a free from Diarmuid Cooney to regain the lead that proved to be their last score of the game.
Dromard began to pile on the pressure and two points apiece from the chief marksmen Francis McGee and Jamsie Martin (one free) put them 0-12 to 0-9 ahead by the 53th minute. The Gaels had chances to register some scores but squandered them all.
A strong finish from Dromard yielded a further 1-2 with the points coming from Jamsie Martin and Francis McGee (free) while Diarmuid Masterson grabbed the goal near the end to clinch the eventual comfortable win.
